These are lean times for small investors who have come to rely on dividends to supplement their income (Simon Duke writes). During the pandemic crisis, many of the most consistent payers have cut, suspended or cancelled dividends.

According to research by Janus Henderson, payouts fell 54 per cent during the second quarter, and no one can say with any certainty when they will return to previous levels. Boards must decide when it’s prudent to cast frugality aside.

At Learning Technologies, a recent bounce in demand has restored confidence in the boardroom. Yesterday the provider of training software and online tools said it would pay an interim dividend and would disburse the final payout from last year, which it deferred in the spring. Jonathan Satchell,
